Ever Grateful - Boilermakers Share the Value of Their Purdue Experience

Image
Purdue was recently named a 2016 ‘Best College Value’ by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance . The ranking highlights Purdue’s excellence and affordability. These traits don’t begin to cover all Purdue has to offer. To share a fuller picture with you, our women engineering student volunteers gave their advice for students looking at colleges. Here are a few nuggets of their wisdom: “Everyone on campus is very friendly , don’t be afraid to approach your upperclassmen or professors about any questions you have!” “Come in with an open mind. Engineering has so many possibilities … Purdue is a great place to be. There’s never a dull moment.” “There are countless organizations on campus, keep an eye out and you’ll be able to find one or more you fit into perfectly .” “Embrace change! Study Tips and Advice

Since most of you are current or future engineering students, I’m sure you are already aware that balancing your time is a tricky, but important, issue while you are in college. You may have seen this schematic before: Although this picture is funny, and sometimes feels painfully accurate, it doesn’t have to be the permanent situation. I believe that it’s possible to be a good student, have time for social activities, participate in clubs, and to get enough sleep (at least the majority of the time!). Some people are morning people and are capable of high-level functioning in the morning; if this is the case, it makes s...

My SWE National Conference Experience

Image
Hi! My name is Kristy Martini and I am a junior studying electrical engineering .  I recently traveled to Nashville, Tennessee for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) National Conference .  I received a travel grant that allowed me to have this wonderful experience and I would like to start this blog post by expressing my gratitude to the anonymous provider of the grant.  Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be inspired by powerful women in STEM fields.  This was the first conference of any type I have ever attended, so I did not know what to expect.  I researched past SWE conferences before attending and created a schedule of seminars that interested me.  The goal I set for myself before attending the conference was to meet at least three women who had become not only engineering leaders in their respective companies, but also leaders in their personal lives and their families.  I imagined it would be difficult to achieve this goal, as I though...
