Meet the Boilermakers - Making Friends at College

When asked about their favorite part of Purdue, many Boilermakers immediate response is "the people". I meet with students and prospective students regularly to discuss their Purdue experiences. In every conversation, students bring up the welcoming environment and culture on this campus. I hope you feel great comfort and excitement looking forward to starting at Purdue this fall. Purdue’s Unique Orientation: BOILER GOLD RUSH

Starting your college career can be an intimidating thing to think about but also is an exciting step toward your future. The friendships you make and the experiences you have in college will stick with you forever. That being said, many new students ask the questions, “How do you make friends in college?” or “How do you know how to get involved on campus?”. At Purdue, the answer to this question can be Boiler Gold Rush! Boiler Gold Rush, BGR, is an orientation program that takes place the week before classes and consists of events and activities that teach you about the traditions and resources of Purdue. It also is a great way to begin friendships with your peers! You are placed in a group of about 15 other new students and are assigned a Team Leader, TL, who will stick with your group and guide you through the days of BGR.  This helps take away from the size of Purdue and give you a close network of people to get to know who live near you in the dorms. Cool Class Spotlight: EEE 495

This semester, I took at design class called EEE 495: Urban Water Projects.  The goal of this class is to generate transdisciplinary knowledge through innovative campus-community projects.  There are about 16 of us in the class, and we were all broken up into project teams and assigned community partners who we would work with to design solutions to storm water runoff. Storm water runoff is when precipitation (like snow and rain) that runs off the land.  In a natural setting, storm water runoff will drain into local water bodies; in a developed area, like a town or city, the storm water runoff will runoff on impervious surfaces (streets, rooftops, parking) and is therefore unable to infiltrate into the ground and back into the natural hydrological cycle.  When storm water hits impervious surfaces, it will runoff into drainage ditches, storm drains, and sewer systems, picking up pollutants like nitrogen and phosphorous and sediment.  After this, the storm water w...
